Sex Toys For Singers

David Ley, Vocal Coach, Uses Sex Toys To Help Singers Reach Higher Octaves

Vocal instructor David Ley says singers can get permanent improvement by putting a vibrator near their throat.

A vocal coach in Canada is creating a lot of buzz with his titillating technique for improving his students' singing skills: He puts sex toys on their throats.

University of Alberta drama professor David Ley swears by the sex toys and uses them to massage the throats of actors and singers.

“I know it’s a bit different … I know there’s a giggle factor, but it works. It relaxes tension in the larynx … it improves range and projection.” Ley said, according to MetroNews.ca.

Speech pathologists massage the larynx to loosen up tension, but some people hate the feeling of fingers on their throat so Ley began to search for a new method that would help performers increase their vocal power.

That search led him to a sex shop where he found some hand-held vibrators that had a frequency around 100 and 120 hertz, the range of the human voice. He tried some sample sex toys on a student and got good results. And despite the creep factor, staff at the school say he's a trusted, intelligent teacher.

“Not only did it free tension in the laryngeal muscles, but it seemed to stimulate vibrations in the vocal folds,” Ley told RedOrbit.com

Ley is not a physician or therapist, and recommends people with voice or throat issues first go to a doctor.

"What I’m trying to do is to help the person hit that high note or harness their emotional energy,” he told the Toronto Star.

So far, Ley has used his sex toys on 150 people and said the only side effect seems to be an increase in phlegm. The solution to that is simply to stop rubbing the vibrators on the neck before that happens.

"So far nobody has said that there's a problem or reported a bad side effect from doing this," he told vocal coach and blogger Claudia Friedlander, adding that the results seem to be permanent. "One thing I have noticed is that I hardly need to do it any more; it's like, do it enough and you stay like that.

"Hopefully, like any good training tool, it's something that gets you somewhere and helps you maintain it, but once you're there, you're there."
