I don't feel any different.'Weighing 12lb - only 9lb more than her weight at birth, Jyoti dreams of becoming an actress.Despite her size she insists on living as normal a life as possible in her home town of Nagpur in India - including going to the local school..'When I first went to shool everyone was so big I used to get scared but I'm okay now, I like it. I have a different desk and chair that were made for me.. I'm a normal student.'

Hotel and Motel SCAM

It seems that the schemes to cheat people never stops and it won't!
But keeping people informed is a key to helping prevent this from happening to your friends and relatives so please forward to all of yours.

Can't be too careful these days!

This so simple, and reading this, anyone could be caught.

You arrive at your hotel and check in at the front desk. When checking in, you give the front desk your credit card (for all the charges for your room). You get to your room and settle in.

Someone calls the front desk and asked for (example) Room 620 (which happens to be your room). Your phone rings in your room. You answer and the person on the other end says the following, 'This is the front desk. When checking in, we came cross a problem with your charge card information. Please re-read me your credit card number and verify the last 3 digits numbers at the reverse side of your charge card.'

Not thinking anything you might give this person your information, since the call seems to come from the front desk. But actually, it is a scam of someone calling from outside the hotel/front desk. They ask for a random room number. Then, ask you for credit card
information and address information. Sounding so professional that you do think you are talking to the front desk.

If you ever encounter this problem on your vacation, tell the caller that you will be down at the front desk to clear up any problems.
Then, go to the front desk and ask if there was a problem.
If there was none, inform the manager of the hotel that someone called to scam you of your credit card information acting like a front desk employee.

Touching Education - The Breakthrough Education

Touching education - Reviving student motivation with the Soetanto Effect

- Four doctorates: engineering, medicine, pharmacy and pedagogy

I first came to Japan in 1974 as a university student, and received doctorates in engineering and medicine. Recently I also obtained doctorates in pharmacy and pedagogy. Since my original field of study was medical engineering, which is an interdisciplinary field, it was natural for me to extend my area of interest. I did science and engineering research on health-related machines, and subsequently pursued clinical medicine studies of medical machinery. I extended the scope of my studies of medical machines from use in checkups to use in medical treatment, and in the course of my pharmaceutical research I invented an ultrasonic contrast agent which received dozens of basic patents in Japan and two in the U.S.A.

 My last PhD, in pedagogy, is different in nature from other three. In 1993, I ended my research life in the U.S.A., and decided to teach at Toin University of Yokohama, a newly established private university in Japan. At that time, a number of new universities were being established throughout Japan. It seemed to me then that the university students had little motivation to study. University should be a place where students eagerly pursue their studies, actively learning and questioning, but what I saw was the same passive study I had seen in Japanese high schools.

  The campus was full of students devoid of enthusiasm. In addition, teachers turned a blind eye to the situation. I started teaching in that kind of scenario but I was unable to find satisfaction; I had left Indonesia for the single-minded pursuit of my studies. How could I accept such unmotivated, incapable students, accounting for some 80% of the entire university enrolment? I took this as a challenge. Ever since I started teaching at Toin University of Yokohama, I have been creating activities to develop the students' spirit and to inspire them to seek an education. I took up education as one of my research areas, and I have been trying to achieve quality research and effective education simultaneously. Through my practice, I came to understand that if the teachers improve, the students will change and inevitably the school itself will be transformed.

 In my fourth PhD I worked to create a theory based on my teaching experience in Japan: the IOC (Interactive Operation Control) teaching method. Put simply, the research is about how to give lectures that motivate students and what sort of education generates motivation and enthusiasm. This was a difficult study, but my education theory was recognized, and I was offered a position at Waseda University. Now I am eager to take on the challenge of a new research field, the conjunction of pedagogy and brain science.

 It is important for a scholar to delve deeply into a narrow field, but it would be beneficial if that study were linked to social issues at the same time. Furthermore, it would be even more valuable if that research could provide leadership in a new field, rather than following in the path of existing research. As I look back on my past, although there were some times when I worked too much and took it too seriously, I think my life has been a happy one.

Before I came to Japan, in my home country, Indonesia, I helped my elder brother in his trading company from the time I was a high school student. The company was dealing in electronic devices and parts. I worked there because my Chinese high school closed during an abortive communist coup attempt (the 9.30 Incident in 1965 against the Sukarno regime). I was a first year high school student then. My brother's company bought medical goods in foreign countries such as Hong Kong and sold them wholesale in Indonesia. I seem to have had natural management skill, and as my decisions brought success, the company grew steadily.

At the same time that I was helping with the company, I was engaged in volunteer activity as a home tutor for children who could not go to school. In Indonesia there are many children who cannot finish even elementary school. Among them, I still remember one family vividly: the mother had died during childbirth, and the six children were living with the father, who was prone to heavy drinking and violence in the home. As there was no money even for food, all the children were busy trying to subsist, and had no time at all to study. I was just a nuisance to them and they would not even let me into their house. However, I finally worked my way into their lives by helping them with household chores such as cleaning, fetching water and washing, and by making fighting kites to amuse them.

The house had only 60 watt lighting and was always dim inside. One day when I was peering at the walls inside the house, I found that they were covered with hundreds of dead mosquitoes and blood. I spent my own money to buy some cheap lime, mixed it with some coloring and painted the walls nicely to brighten the children's lives a little. When the father saw this, his attitude dramatically changed, and finally he told me, "I feel I can trust you with my children." The children were also surprised, shouting, "Hey, our dad has changed!"

It turned out that the father had been a teacher some years before. He did not like any of the home tutors who came to their house before me because they were not sincere enough to show their real motives. I believe that if you face somebody with sincerity, you can surely communicate with and relate to the person. My experience of facing the family sincerely in those days led to my approach to education.

Meanwhile, I entered an Indonesian high school and resumed my studies. I was interested in electronic and electrical engineering but there was no specialized school at that time, so I ordered English books and studied independently. I sometimes brought my friends together and taught them too. In Indonesia, books in the post are often stolen because of the valuable postal stamps on them. I often did not receive my orders. As a last resort, I would go to the black market to find my stolen books, and had to buy them a second time. That was a hard experience, but it was the beginning of my study of science and engineering.

Shortly after that, I started to think I'd like to study engineering seriously, at a Japanese university. Usually Chinese-Indonesian students go to university in Europe or the United States, but I was attracted to the excellence of Japanese electric-appliance makers at that time and wanted to learn technology in Japan. My elder brother strongly objected, saying, "There is no way you can study abroad now, when the company has just started making a profit." However, I managed to convince him that I really wanted to study. My family allowed me to leave because they all knew that it is difficult for foreigners to stay permanently in Japan, so they expected that I would be back shortly. I arrived in Japan with one years' savings.

When I arrived in Japan, I first studied Japanese and then entered Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology. I was 26, 8 years older than my fellow students. I went on to the graduate school of Tokyo Institute of Technology and received a doctorate in medical engineering. However, it is difficult to embark on a research career in Japan with only one PhD, so I studied for a doctorate in medicine at the graduate school of Tohoku University. Even with two PhDs, however, I still could not find a career opportunity. Having encountered a barrier in Japan, I presented my research at an academic conference in the U.S.A. Immediately a professor who was a leading authority on ultrasound medical diagnosis equipment in the U.S.A. offered me a position there. Thus began my research life, working as associate professor at Drexel University and Thomas Jefferson University, receiving a National Institute of Health research grant of more than 1 million dollars.

In the meantime, an offer from Japan came out of the blue. Although I had complicated feelings about going back to Japan, my sense of nostalgia won out; I declined a professorship in the U.S.A. and came back to Japan in 1993, taking a position at Toin University of Yokohama (then Toin Gakuen University of Yokohama). I created the Department of Medical Engineering, the first one in Japan, and established the Center for Advanced Research in Biomedical Engineering with a 1.5 billion yen subsidy from the Ministry of Education, as it was called at the time. Later, working in education, I established an original educational methodology, which was later called the Soetanto Method.

In my classes, I made rules such as "Students must attend more than 70% of classes", "Students cannot enter the classroom if they are more than 10 minutes late", and "Talking in class is strictly prohibited." Even if students got high scores on the exams, they would fail if they did not abide by my rules. In addition, the study materials for the class were all in English, as were the exercises and tests in the second half of the course. To motivate my students I said, "I will teach things important to you in a way that will interest you. If you take my class for a year, I promise that you will be confident in the future as a prospective engineer or researcher."

To keep such promises was very hard. How could I make my class attractive to students? Such a class cannot be a once or twice affair, but must be continuous. Even 50-minute high school classes are too long and too boring for the students, so it is indeed not an easy matter to get students interested in 90-minute university classes. So, while teaching the basics of science and technology such as electronic engineering, I added anecdotes and insights that seemed to be useful for them. Such talks should not only be interesting; they should also touch the students' hearts and stay with them.

The students responded very well. Comments such as "Soetanto's classes are interesting and useful and above all, they give me confidence," gradually spread, and I got profound results in my second year. My way of bringing out students' potential started to be called the Soetanto Effect. Reading the students' impressions, it is clear that their awareness and confidence increased.

For example, one student wrote, "Something very warm welled up deep inside of me and I could not stop my body from shaking. At that moment I was overwhelmed by a strong impression that it was not too late, I could be reborn: I wanted to change and I did not want to have an inferiority complex any more." This student had had a dream of becoming a medical doctor but had given it up a long time before I met him. However, when he found out that my specialty was medical engineering and that after getting a PhD in engineering I had gotten a PhD in medicine, his hopes for such a career began to revive. My job as an educator is to encourage students not to give up their dreams, and to make them aware that they can achieve those dreams if they try.

That student later entered my laboratory, and I entrusted an important part of my ultrasonic contrast agent research to him, and I let him to fill out the patent application form himself. It is important to give students opportunities and to make them think. This will develop their motivation and lead to a feeling of confidence that they can succeed if they try.

In the end, the traditional Japanese soft approach has led students to think that 'the easier the better" and has spoiled them. What is necessary now is an education that changes their outlook. It is essential for them to understand that a society where people can get things without making effort is not possible. If teachers convey the message, "I believe in you, so I want you to do everything you can," the students will be able to retrieve their lost confidence and cultivate their ability to face their environment.

I worked for Toin University of Yokohama for nine years and was chosen best researcher and best educator seven years in a row. Some of my students received PhDs, and a number of them proceeded to doctoral programs in leading universities such as Tokyo Institute of Technology. Some students, hearing of my reputation, decided to repeat a year in school, waiting for their turn to study in my laboratory. There is a deep-rooted thinking in Japanese universities that research must come first and education second. However, I believe they are equally important.

During that time, I damaged my health with overwork and had to take rest for a while. Nevertheless, my nature did not let me lie back; while recovering I earned a PhD in pharmacology at Tokyo University of Science, based on my previous research on ultrasonic contrast agents. Following that, I received a PhD in pedagogy from Waseda University based on my past ten years of practice of the Soetanto Method. I was invited to join the Faculty of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University as a visiting professor in January 2003, and became a full-time professor in September 2003.

- Elucidating the mechanism of motivation by connecting brain science and science and engineering

My article, 'Higher education that doesn't touch students' hearts: it is too late to think about ways of preventing the freeter (part time worker) phenomenon' was published in the Nikkei Shimbun interview column in September 6, 2004. There was extensive public reaction to the comments I made there, such as "Teachers focus on only 20% of the students, and the rest will be seen as a burden when they go out into society," and "Teachers should seek out a teaching method that touches students' hearts and changes them instantly, rather than using superficial, symptom-oriented approaches."

The large number of young people who have no motivation or no intention of getting a job, the freeters and NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training) has become a major social issue. However, I think the fundamental cause of this phenomenon lies in the Japanese school system, which fails to develop students' motivation, and in parental values, which accept young people's apathy and amae (emotional dependence). In Japan schools tend to brand students with low grades as 'students without motivation' and give up teaching them anything. Even if the top 10 or 20 percent students are leading the society, if 80 percent cannot be channeled into useful work, both society and the environment will be spoiled.

There are still so many unresolved issues in Japanese higher education. Students still have no motivation. This issue is strongly related to issues such as the shape of Japanese society and the family. Likewise, many university teachers lack the technique and intention necessary for a motivating education. Addressing this issue will be my last research challenge. With Waseda University as a base, I would like to practice the Soetanto Method and spread it in Japan and overseas, and then work to elucidate the mechanism of motivation through a scientific approach incorporating brain science, science and engineering.

In October 2004, I established the Clinical Education and Science Research Institute for Project Research Institutes, Comprehensive Research Organization, Waseda University and became its director. In February 2005, I was given a chance to provide a special 4-month course at Venice International University to practice the Soetanto Method. I gave students from more than 10 world leading universities two lectures in English entitled "Comparative study of higher education," and "Issues and solutions in higher education." The theory of the Soetanto Method was used in both lectures and the effect was well demonstrated. The students increased their activity levels: there was a remarkable difference in their attitude between the beginning of the class and the end. This demonstrated that the Soetanto Method is effective regardless of country or region.

I also initiated educational activities in Asia. When I gave a presentation at a meeting held by WAA (We are Asian) in Japan, there was a Chinese professor in the audience. As soon as he got back to China, he used the Soetanto Method in his marketing class. He wrote me later, "It was truly successful. I became the most popular professor in the university." I was shocked by that unexpected feedback, but it was most gratifying.

I have been giving presentations in Indonesia since 2000. In June 2005, a MOU (memorandum of understanding) affiliation was established between Waseda University and President University in Indonesia. On that occasion, I gave a commemorative presentation in Indonesia that was broadcast on three TV stations. In addition, a major Indonesian newspaper published an article about the Soetanto Method, which they called 'Education of Encouragement." The story of an Indonesian person with 4 PhDs who is a professor at Waseda University in Japan became a topic of conversation in Indonesia, a 'Soetanto Phenomenon.' I will be happy if I can take this opportunity to show my gratitude to my mother country by providing such service.

In Japan, professors of university faculties such as Business Administration at Senshu University and Information Sciences at Hiroshima City University are using the Soetanto Method now. For students, it does not matter who started the method, and I am not going to insist that it is my idea. It would be most gratifying if those professors who practice the method would develop it in their own way.

In 2004 I gave a presentation at Yoyogi Seminar, a Tokyo based prep school. A few thousand students, including students who watched the video conference version at branches in outlying areas, attended my presentation. That same evening, I received a great number of e-mails and cell phone messages from students in all parts of the country, saying things like, "I am deeply touched. I feel like I can do it too." and "I would like to study under Prof. Soetanto." I was deeply touched too and shed happy tears.

The other day I had my first class on "Motivation and Education" at Waseda University. I found among the students one who had entered Waseda because he had heard my speech at Yoyogi Seminar. He wrote me his impression in English, "Since I got so much power from your speech at Yoyogi Seminar last year, I feel that I can do anything I want to. I made a great effort to enter Waseda's School of International Liberal Studies because I absolutely wanted to study in your class. Today I listened to your first class and I was shocked more than before in that I felt I was still being too easy on myself. I became acutely aware of the necessity of making greater effort and of changing my attitude." I am convinced anew of the notion that the students are the leading characters in education, and that each one of them should act out a brilliant human drama.

Things have changed dramatically in the last decade. In this ever more competitive society with fewer and fewer children, this is not the time to compete by waving around the names of top class universities. A rosy future is never assured even though one enters Tokyo University or Waseda University. In order to have affluent and meaningful lives, people must develop themselves, open up to their potential and find something they really want to do, all by themselves. Universities should provide a matrix for that to happen.

Chinese students 'at risk' in Australia

'Asian dog': Train assault taunt

Chinese officials and media outlets say Australia is no longer safe for international students.

The Consular and popular outrage in China has stemmed from an alleged violent Sydney train assault that occurred earlier this week involving two Chinese students.

Six people, aged between 14 and 18, have been charged with a range of robbery and assault offences after an incident is said to have taken place between Central and Rockdale stations at around 12.30am on Monday morning.

A Chinese student currently undertaking a Masters degree at the University of Technology took to the social media site Weibo claiming he and his friend had been victims of a brutal attack that included racial taunts.

"They were calling us Asian dogs and pussies while they were beating us. When my friend tried to wipe blood from his nose, a teenaged girl stuffed my friend's mouth with her tampon removed from her pants."

Another woman passenger, who was also targeted by the thieves, allegedly told the attackers to "rob them, they are Asian and they have got money." the blog post reportedly read.

Speaking exclusively to 7News, assault victim Alex Huang described his experience, "My nose, the bone here is broken, my cheekbone here is broken, my jaw, the muscle here is so painful I couldn't open my mouth properly,"

"After we give them the money they still punch us."

"And don't let us go." Huang told 7News.

According to media reports the Chinese consulate-general in Sydney has since alerted visiting citizens to avoid unnecessary travel after dark on its website.

Hundreds of millions of Chinese Central Television viewers have been reportedly told of rising youth crime in Australia that is posing a threat to Chinese international students.

"Once upon a time, Australia had one of the lowest crime rates in the world and was considered one of the safest places to study. However, the safety of overseas students studying here is under threat from escalating youth crime," CCTV is said to have reported.

The report relayed information about Sydney’s recent spate of shootings of which some teens have been arrested.

"One of the headline comments has been that Sydney is a very unsafe place to be, for Chinese nationals." Joel Wing-Lun from the Australia-China Youth Council says.

It is understood that a rapidly growing petition is circulating within the student community, and there is consideration to rally.
Speaking to 7News of the alleged train assault, Arfa Noor from the Council for International Students says, "It is going to impact the image that we have as an international education sector, destination for international students."

When I meditated on the word   Guidance, 
I kept seeing "dance" at the end of the word. 
I remember reading that doing God's will is a lot like dancing. 
When two people try to lead, nothing feels right.. 
The movement doesn't flow with the music, 
and everything is quite uncomfortable and jerky. 
When one person realizes that, and lets the other lead, 
both bodies begin to flow with the music. 
One gives gentle cues, perhaps with a nudge to the back 
or by pressing Lightly in one direction or another. 
It's as if two become one body, moving beautifully. 
The dance takes surrender, willingness, 
and attentiveness from one person 
and gentle guidance and skill from the other. 
My eyes drew back to the word   Guidance. 
When I saw "G": I thought of God, followed by "u" and "i". 
"God, "u" and "i" dance." 
God, you, and I dance. 
As I lowered my head, I became willing to trust 
that I would get     guidance about my life. 
Once again, I became willing to let God lead. 
My prayer for you today is that God's blessings

There was a little boy visiting his grandparents on their farm. And he was given a slingshot to play with out in the woods. He practiced in the woods, but he could never hit the target. And getting a little discouraged; he headed back to dinner.

As he was walking back he saw Grandma's pet duck. Just out of impulse, he let fly, hit the duck square in the head, and killed it. He was shocked and grieved. In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the wood pile, only to see his sister watching. Sally had seen it all, but she said nothing.

After lunch that day grandma said, "Sally, let's wash the dishes." But Sally said, "Grandma, Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen today didn't you Johnny?" And then she whispered to him, "Remember, the duck?"

So Johnny did the dishes. Later Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing, and Grandma said, "I'm sorry but I need Sally to help make supper." But Sally smiled and said, "Well, that's all right because Johnny told me he wanted to help," and she whispered again, "remember, the duck?" So Sally went fishing and Johnny stayed.

After several days of Johnny doing both his chores and Sally's, he finally couldn't stand it any longer. He came to Grandma and confessed that he killed the duck. She knelt down, gave him a hug, and said, "Sweetheart, I know. You see, I was standing at the window and I saw the whole thing. But because I love you, I forgave you. But I was just wondering how long you would let Sally make a slave of you."

I don't know what's in your past. I don't know what one sin the enemy keeps throwing up in your face. But whatever it is, I want you to know something. Jesus Christ was standing at the window. And He saw the whole thing. But because He loves you, He has forgiven you. Perhaps He's wondering how long you'll let the enemy make a slave out of you.

It is the month of August, on the shores of the Black Sea . It is raining, and the little town looks totally deserted. It is tough times, everybody is in debt, and everybody lives on credit.

Suddenly, a rich tourist comes to town.
He enters the only hotel, lays a 100 Euro note on the reception counter, and goes to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one.

The hotel proprietor takes the 100 Euro note and runs to pay his debt to the butcher.

The Butcher takes the 100 Euro note, and runs to pay his debt to the pig grower.

The pig grower takes the 100 Euro note, and runs to pay his debt to the supplier of his feed and fuel.

The supplier of feed and fuel takes the 100 Euro note and runs to pay his debt to the town's prostitute that in these hard times, gave her "services" on credit.

The hooker runs to the hotel, and pays off her debt with the 100 Euro note to the hotel proprietor to pay for the rooms that she rented when she brought her clients there.

The hotel proprietor then lays the 100 Euro note back on the counter so that the rich tourist will not suspect anything.

At that moment, the rich tourist comes down after inspecting the rooms, and takes his 100 Euro note, after saying that he did not like any of the rooms, and leaves town.

No one earned anything. However, the whole town is now without debt, and looks to the future with a lot of optimism.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how the United States Government is doing business.

If the chain is not broken, then all goes well.

How to Handle Little Liars

When Cindy Ballagh's 10-year-old son Kaden lost his portable video game recently, she asked him where he last put it. His answer: on his dresser.

After they spent several minutes searching on, under and all around the dresser, she happened to spot the game—buried in his bed. He had been playing with it there the night before and broke a rule by falling asleep with it, says Ms. Ballagh, of Clarksville, Tenn. Frustrated, she told Kaden he would get in less trouble if he would "just be honest and tell the truth."

It's a tense moment—one almost all parents experience: You look in your child's eyes and realize: "He's lying."

Lying is, in truth, a milestone of normal child development and starts as early as age 2. More than one-third of 3-year-olds will lie to keep from getting in trouble, based on research led by Victoria Talwar, an associate professor of developmental psychology at McGill University in Montreal. By ages 4 to 7, more than half of children will lie to avoid punishment, as Ms. Ballagh believes Kaden did, or to gain attention or approval; the same pattern appears in studies in Britain, West Africa and China.

Researchers are taking a new interest in children's lying, using experimental techniques to explore its role in cognitive and moral development and applying the knowledge to court cases and investigations of bullying and other problems. Even though lying is an expected behavior among children, parents influence whether it tapers off or escalates by serving as both police and models of desirable behavior.

The challenge with preschoolers is helping them distinguish between making up a fairy tale and telling a harmful lie. When Krista Hein found a bowl of cereal on the floor, her 4-year-old daughter Syra had an explanation: Monkey, the family's Chinese pug, did it. Another time, Syra grabbed a cookie from the kitchen, telling her mom that Daddy gave her permission.

Ms. Hein loves Syra's lively imagination and doesn't want her to stop telling stories about princesses and magic kingdoms. To teach her that lying to cover up a misdeed is bad, she talks about potential consequences, such as losing friends or hurting others' feelings. If Syra honestly admits she broke a rule, Ms. Hein, who lives in Albuquerque, N.M., expresses her approval.

Parents are remarkably bad at detecting their children's lies. In experimental studies of preschoolers, parents were able to detect accurately when their children were lying only 53% of the time—a little better than chance, according to a 2010 study led by Dr. Talwar. That falls to 33% by the time their kids are 6 to 8 years old. And parents of 9- to 11-year-olds have only about a 1 in 4 chance of knowing when their kids are lying.

Moms and dads have what researchers call "a truthfulness bias." They want and need to believe their kids are telling the truth.

And "there's no Pinocchio's nose" to serve as a reliable signal that a child is lying, Dr. Talwar says. Sometimes kids will glance away uneasily, shift from one foot to the other or cross arms in front of the body—but not always. Also, kids get better at concealing lies as they grow older, says researcher Angela Crossman, an associate professor of psychology at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice at City University of New York.

And the cleverest lies are often told by the most focused and socially savvy kids. To tell a plausible lie, children must be able to understand how others see things. They also have to be able to maintain an alibi in the face of parental questioning and scrutiny. Children with good "executive function" skills, including self-control and the ability to focus on tasks, tend to be more skillful liars, Dr. Talwar says.

Adults set a confusing example by lying once a day, on average, based on a 1996 study led by researchers at the University of Virginia. Daily diaries of 147 participants' interactions with others showed that about 1 in 4 of the instances were white lies. Most of the others were attempts by study participants to appear kinder or smarter to others, or to avoid embarrassment.

Parents who lie for convenience's sake, by calling in "sick" at work to attend a sporting event, for example, suggest truthfulness doesn't matter. Or they might give mixed signals, such as, "Get A's at all costs," but "Don't cheat," fostering the kind of stress that can lead to cheating.

As children get older, they typically tell more white lies and fewer harmful ones. In a 2010 study of 120 children ages 7, 9 and 11, researchers at Beijing Normal University in China found kids increasingly told altruistic lies to avoid hurting others' feelings.

By the teen years, some kids lie to pull away from their parents and gain privacy, but often lack the skills to handle the resulting challenges. On CafeMom.com, where lying generates numerous posts from parents, one mother wrote that her teen lied to cover up that he was being bullied at school because he wanted to handle it himself. When the mom realized why her son was struggling, she arranged counseling to help him cope.

More than half of parents have been troubled by a child who lies regularly, usually between the ages of 2 and 7, according to a recent poll of 125 parents by the parenting website BabyCenter.com. Harsh punishments don't work very well, research shows. Instead, psychologists say parents should get professional help if a child's lying becomes a habit or disrupts normal activities, such as friendships or school. Lying can be one sign of a what mental-health professionals call conduct disorder if children also have other problems, such as aggression, truancy from school or drug abuse, the American Academy of Pediatrics says.

Creating an environment where truth is valued can help clear the fog. Kelly Gorski's 3-year-old daughter Lucidia was confused at a recent dinner gathering when she saw a guest compliment the host on her cooking, just minutes after they had overheard the same guest say privately that she disliked the meal.

Ms. Gorski explained that the guest was trying to avoid hurting the host's feelings. Then she gave Lucidia an alternative: "You can tell the truth without hurting someone" by finding something else to praise—saying, for example, that she appreciated the effort in preparing the meal, says Ms. Gorski, of Allentown, Pa.

The lesson, Ms. Gorski says: It's important "to be an honest person, but there are many ways to communicate the truth without being blunt or forceful or harsh."

The pick-up was traveling about 75 mph from right to left when it crashed through the guardrail.
It flipped end-over-end bounced off and across the culvert outlet, and landed right side up on the left side of the culvert, facing the opposite direction from which the driver was traveling.
The 22-year-old driver and his 18-year-old passenger were unhurt except for minor cuts and bruises.

Very Quietly Obama's Citizenship Case Reaches The Supreme Court

OBAMA'S CITIZENSHIP CASE REACHES THE SUPREME COURT

In a move certain to fuel the debate over Obama's qualifications for the presidency, the group "Americans for Freedom of Information" has Released copies of President Obama's college transcripts from Occidental College ... Released today, the transcript school indicates that Obama, under the name Barry Soetoro, received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia as an undergraduate. The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship. This document would seem to provide the smoking gun that many of Obama's detractors have been seeking.

    Along with the evidence that he was first born in Kenya and there is no record of him ever applying for US citizenship, this is looking pretty grim. The news has created a firestorm at the White House as the release casts increasing doubt about Obama's legitimacy and qualification to serve as President -- article titled, "Obama Eligibility Questioned," leading some to speculate that the story may overshadow economic issues ... ."

    In a related matter, under growing pressure from several groups, Justice Antonin Scalia announced that the Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday to hear arguments concerning Obama's legal eligibility to serve as President, in a case brought by Leo Donofrio of New Jersey. This lawsuit claims Obama's dual citizenship disqualified him from serving as president.. Donofrio's case is just one of 18 suits brought by citizens demanding proof of Obama's citizenship or qualification to serve as president.

    Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation has released the results of their investigation of Obama's campaign spending. This study estimates that Obama has spent upwards of $950,000 in campaign funds in the past year with eleven law firms in 12 states for legal resources to block disclosure of any of his personal records. Mr. Kreep indicated that the investigation is still ongoing but that the final report will be provided to the U.S. Attorney general, Eric Holder. Mr. Holder has refused to comment on the matter...

    While I've little interest in getting in the middle of the Obama birth issue, Paul Hollrah over at FSM did so yesterday and believes the issue can be resolved by Obama answering one simple question: What passport did he use when he was shuttling between New York, Jakarta, and Karachi?

    So how did a young man who arrived in New York in early June 1981, without the price of a hotel room in his pocket, suddenly come up with the price of a round-the-world trip just a month later?

    And once he was on a plane, shuttling between New York, Jakarta, and Karachi, what passport was he offering when he passed through Customs and Immigration?

    The American people not only deserve to have answers to these questions, they must have answers. It makes the debate over Obama's citizenship a rather short and simple one.

        Q: Did he travel to Pakistan in 1981, at age 20?
        A : Yes, by his own admission.

        Q: What passport did he travel under?
        A: There are only three possibilities.

            1) He traveled with a U.S. ... Passport,
            2) He traveled with a British passport, or
            3) He traveled with an Indonesia passport.

        Q: Is it possible that Obama traveled with a U.S. Passport in 1981?
        A: No. It is not possible. Pakistan was on the U.S. .. State Department's "no travel" list in 1981.

    Conclusion: When Obama went to Pakistan in 1981 he was traveling either with a British passport or an Indonesian passport.

    If he were traveling with a British passport that would provide proof that he was born in Kenya on August 4, 1961, not in Hawaii as he claims.. And if he were traveling with an Indonesian passport that would tend to prove that he relinquished whatever previous citizenship he held, British or American, prior to being adopted by his Indonesian step-father in 1967.

    Whatever the truth of the matter, the American people need to know how he managed to become a "natural born" American citizen between 1981 and 2008.

    Given the destructive nature of his plans for America, as illustrated by his speech before Congress and the disastrous spending plan he has presented to Congress, the sooner we learn the truth of all this, the better.
