There are plenty of things you are already doing that fall under the umbrella of corporate social responsibility (CSR), and your community, suppliers, customers and employees may not be aware of them. Make them notice. Show the world you provide flexible hours for employees or have in-house day care, you have greened your facilities with energy-saving light bulbs or a recycling program, and you contribute to local charities.
Make It a Priority
Having a top-down attitude about CSR will make social responsibility more important in the eyes of your shareholders, employees and the public. Corporate Responsibility Officer magazinePublisher Jay Whitehead says companies that live and breathe these sorts of policies are more successful in their implementation in the long run.
Accountability
Even if your company is a small one, Whitehead recommends that you hold someone personally accountable for the success or failure of your social responsibility agenda. This person should be responsible for enforcing policies, seeking out new initiatives that the company can put in place, getting employees involved in the policies, and making sure that the public is aware of all the work being done.
Listen to the Masses
Your employees often have the best ideas about how to make the office run more efficiently or what community programs your company should be reaching out to. Make it easier for your employees to give you their ideas, and get involved in the company's CSR programs by creating a corporate intranet or blog that connects you directly with your employees.
Do It Economically
Being socially responsible doesn't have to cost your company a lot of money. It can begin with changing the way the company functions on a day-to-day basis. Work with your employees to start using coffee mugs instead of throwing out paper cups several times a day, and limit the sorts of documents that employees print to only the necessary items.
