Balkan's Toxic Milk - Warning!

Conflicting reports on milk safety in Serbia

BELGRADE, Secretary of Agriculture of Vojvodina region Goran Jesic stirred Monday general public by saying that milk in Serbia is not safe for consuming and that first test results show increased levels of Aflatoxin, local media reported on Tuesday.

Jesic wrote on his twitter account that first results of tests are alarming and that in the region of Vojvodina some 29 out of 35 tested milk samples indicate increased levels of Aflatoxin.

Jesic said that source of Aflatoxin are not animals, but their food as last year in Serbia there was also findings of this dangerous mycotoxin in corn samples.

"Contamination comes from the cattle food, this time it is the corn, and there is no reason why it would not show also in the meat," explained Jesic on his twitter account, and added: "Situation is alarming, I cann't see any reason or private interest for milk not to be withdrawn from the market."

Aflatoxin is a species of mykotoxin created by some fungus, mainly found in geographic regions with more warmer and humid climate. It can be found in plants, diary and meet products, and if absorbed in larger quantities it could have cancerous effect.

Meanwhile, the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture on Monday told the National Television of Serbia that of 300 tested samples 272 were completely safe, and that some 28 of them were on the level of allowed levels of Aflatoxin, adding that the finding does not necessarily indicate presence.

"Milk in Serbia is safe for consumption," said chief of Agricultural Inspection Nenad Katanic at an extraordinary press conference regarding this issue.

"In next days we will inform public of all test results as they come to us. If any irregularity is detected we will inform public instantly," said Katanic.

Katanic also made an appeal to the media not to disseminate unconfirmed information.
