Jackpot-winning hawker gives away $280,000 to charity

SINGAPORE - Jackpot-winning hawker Choo Hong Eng donated $280,000 to 26 different charities and causes.
That is more than half of her winnings of $416,742.11, which she had promised to give away.

She received the prize from Marina Bay Sands two weeks ago. Ms Choo, 58, won the money on Oct 18 at MBS, but was told by a manager that there was a glitch with the machine.

It offered to compensate her with $50,000 and a car worth $258,962, but she refused, and complained to the Casino Regulatory Authority.

Among the charities that Ms Choo donated to were the Singapore Buddhist Federation, the National Kidney Foundation, free clinics such as the Public Free Clinic Society, schools (Manjusri Secondary and Maha Bodhi School) and homes for the aged.

She also made a donation to the Royal Thai embassy in aid of the flood relief efforts.

The staunch buddhist received a token of appreciation yesterday from National Kidney foundation chairman, Mr Gerard Ee and MP Tin Pei Ling, at a special dinner organised by the Singapore Buddhist Lodge in Kim Yan Road.
