Female Circumcision

Female circumcision, or more accurately FGC (Female Genital Cutting) or FGM (Female Genital Mutilation), can be of 3 types depending on the amount of tissue removed:
 Type I  : Removal of the clitoris and/or the prepuce (clitoridectomy) .
 Type II : Removal of the clitoris plus part or all of the labia minora
 Type III: Removal of clitoris, labia minora and labia majora, then the two sides are stitched together (called infibulation) , leaving only a small opening for the passage of urine and menstrual blood (see diagrams below). The opening has to be enlarged when the woman marries or during child birth.
