Musicians With Mood Disorders “Embrace The Creative Spark”

By Alicia Sparks

A few days ago I told you about how you can help support your favorite mental health charities and get your holiday shopping done in one fell swoop (I also learned something new; I had no idea Hugh Laurie and the rest of the cast of House were NAMI supporters).

Today, I want to tell you about another way you can check off a name on the ol’ holiday shopping list - purchase 2008 Facing Us Music Album.

For those of you who don’t know, the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) and Dave’s Spark held the 2008 Facing Us Music Contest earlier this year “to recognize and embrace the creative spark of so many individuals who live with mood disorders.” Of the 16 finalists, 13, well, remained finalists, and three were announced the winners.

First Place: Radio Jesus (or, Ray Henry Ulrich) and his song “Never Mind.” I really liked this song. You can check it out at his MySpace page, and learn more about Ray at www.radiojesusmusic.com.

Second Place: Miria with “Break Your Heart.” Miria once had her heart set on winning a Grey’s Anatomy music contest, but I don’t know how that panned out - she didn’t elaborate after her first blog entry (if it wasn’t a success, it’s OK honey; I haven’t dug Grey’s music since Season Three). Whatever the outcome, she apparently moved on in a big way and went on to co-produce the first Los Angeles Women’s Music Festival. Learn more about Miria at www.miriamusic.com.

Third Place: Ben Mitchell Arthur with “Lifetime.” Not only does Arthur make music (check out The Arthur Clark Band), but he also published A Simple Twist of Faith, “a poetic journey of recovery from schizophrenia,” in 2006.

Anyway, you can purchase the album for $12 and not only get some good tunes (with some interesting titles - “Crack Baby”?), but also help support a good cause.
