Bye, Bye Denny Crane

Last night marked the end of a five-season era for me: The final episode of Boston Legal. Final. Like, ever.

Although the Chinese gabazillionaires actually did purchase Crane, Poole & Schmidt (and broke my heart with the name change Chang, Poole & Schmidt), Boston Legal creator David E. Kelley and writers did placate me a bit by allowing Alan Shore and Denny Crane to win over the US Supreme Court and get that experimental Alzheimer’s drug for Denny.

I would love to know how that goes. Will Denny’s “Mad Cow” get better? Or will Alan have to start assuming his husbandly duties much sooner than he’d like?

Let’s hope for the former.

For all Denny’s shenanigans and sometimes exhausting quirks, Kelley and the Boston Legal writers did what I believe was a pretty good job of conveying the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease. Throughout the five seasons I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, I’ve gasped in shock and amazement.

I’ve even been known to mumble a “Denny Crane” or two.

Over the course of five seasons, I’ve also been very pleased with how Boston Legal handled other mental health- and brain-related issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Asperger’s syndrome. I’ve never felt offended or as if the writers could have probably approached the various subject matters in a less-offensive way.

Will there be a spinoff? I have no idea. Would I watch another five seasons of Alan Shore and Denny Crane? YES.
