Doctors warn teens about taking the 'cinnamon challenge' in new report

CHICAGO –  Don't take the cinnamon challenge. That's the advice from doctors in a new report about a dangerous prank depicted in popular YouTube videos but which has led to hospitalizations and a surge in calls to U.S. poison centers.

The fad involves daring someone to swallow a spoonful of ground cinnamon in 60 seconds without water. But the spice is caustic, and trying to gulp it down can cause choking, throat irritation, breathing trouble and even collapsed lungs, the report said.

Published online Monday in Pediatrics, the report said at least 30 teens nationwide needed medical attention after taking the challenge last year.

'Orange burst of dragon breath'

The number of poison control center calls about teens doing the prank "has increased dramatically," from 51 in 2011 to 222 last year, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers.

"People with asthma or other respiratory conditions are at greater risk of having this result in shortness of breath and trouble breathing," according to an alert posted on the association's website.

Thousands of YouTube videos depict kids attempting the challenge, resulting in an "orange burst of dragon breath" spewing out of their mouths and sometimes hysterical laughter from friends watching the stunt, said report co-author Dr. Steven E. Lipshultz, a pediatrics professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Cinnamon is made from tree bark and contains cellulose fibers that don't easily break down. Animal research suggests that when cinnamon gets into the lungs, it can cause scarring, Lipshultz said.

'It's not cool, and it's dangerous'

Dr. Stephen Pont, a spokesman for the American Academy of Pediatrics and an Austin, Texas pediatrician, said the report is "a call to arms to parents and doctors to be aware of things like the cinnamon challenge" and to pay attention to what their kids are viewing online.

An Ypsilanti, Mich., teen who was hospitalized for a collapsed lung after trying the cinnamon challenge heartily supports the new advice and started her own website -- http://nocinnamonchallenge.com -- telling teens to "just say no" to the fad.

Dejah Reed, 16, said she took the challenge four times -- the final time was in February last year with a friend who didn't want to try it alone.

"I was laughing very hard, and I coughed it out, and I inhaled it into my lungs," she said. "I couldn't breathe."

Her father, Fred Reed, said he arrived home soon after to find Dejah "a pale bluish color. It was very terrifying. I threw her over my shoulder" and drove to a nearby emergency room.

Dejah was hospitalized for four days and went home with an inhaler and said she still has to use it when she gets short of breath from running or talking too fast. Her dad said she'd never had asthma or breathing problems before.

Dejah said she'd read about the challenge on Facebook and other social networking sites and "thought it would be cool" to try.

Now she knows "it's not cool and it's dangerous."

A coroner and the family of a medical student suffering from bulimia who died after taking a banned weight-loss drug bought online have called for a change in the law to further tighten the distribution of the substance, which has been blamed for other deaths.

Dr Graham Mould, a forensic toxicologist, told an inquest into the death of Sarah Houston, 23, that a combination of dinitrophenol (DNP), which is banned from human consumption but is used as a chemical pesticide, and antidepressants may have been fatal.

DNP, which was first used to treat obesity in the 1930s but was banned as a food substance due to its dangerous side effects, continues to be used as a slimming aid by bodybuilders around the world. It was linked to 62 deaths in a study published last year in the Journal of Medical Toxicity.

The University of Leeds medical student, who comes from a family of doctors, is believed to have been taking the drug secretly alongside a prescribed antidepressant Fluoxetine. Houston was found dead in her bedroom by a flatmate.

The inquest in Wakefield heard she had complained of feeling hot and unwell and had been breathing heavily on the evening before she died in September last year.

Mould said there was no evidence of an overdose. "We don't know how long Sarah had been taking DNP but it may have accumulated in her system," he said. "It increases the body's metabolic rate. The side effects can be overheating and breathlessness caused by an increased heart rate and this seems to be consistent with how Sarah was feeling that evening.

"The side effects of DNP were clearly present and it's possible that Fluoxetine may have exacerbated the affect of DNP. At a very high dose, Fluoxetine can have a similar affect to DNP and so one can speculate that the two drugs together might have speeded up the affect."

Mould pointed out that the Food Standards Agency had previously issued a report warning the public not to take DNP.

Coroner David Hinchliff said: "The only way to combat the use of DNP is to bring to the attention of the public how dangerous a substance it is.

"This is not a one-off case and it needs bringing to the public's attention."

Outside court, Houston's family said she was not depressed at the time she died and her health had improved leading up to her death. In a statement, they said that it was incomprehensible that DNP could be purchased over the internet and called on the government to take steps to ensure that no other family suffered in the same way in future.

"It's going to be a slow process, but hopefully approaching the Home Office to begin with will be the right step and hopefully it will be made illegal," said Sarah's father, Geoff Houston. "For those who are selling it, if you have any ounce of decency you must stop."

The coroner recorded a verdict of death by misadventure.

Nine days after early Christianity scholar Karen King announced the discovery of an ancient text suggesting that some Christians believed Jesus was married, the debate has been seemingly nonstop about the Coptic fragment’s authenticity and its role in understanding Jesus’ life.

“The newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, published an article Thursday by leading Coptic scholar Alberto Camplani and an accompanying editorial by the newspaper’s editor, Giovanni Maria Vian, an expert in early Christianity. They both cited concerns expressed by other scholars about the fragment’s authenticity and the fact that it was purchased on the market without a known archaeological provenance,” the Associated Press reported Thursday.

Last week, Harvard Divinity School professor Karen King cited the ancient text during a presentation at a conference for Coptic scholars in Rome. The text while not declaring that he was married, suggests some early Christians believed he had a wife.

Camplani, a professor at Rome’s La Sapienza university who helped organize Tenth International Congress of Coptic Studies, said he and other attendees questioned King’s understanding of the text.

Some religion blogs recently reported that the Harvard Theological Review declined to publish her paper. The academic journal plans to feasture her research in the January edition pending testing of the fragment.

“Dr. King’s ‘marriage fragment’ paper, which Harvard Theological Review is planning to publish in its January, 2013, edition – if testing of the ink and other aspects of the fragment are completed in time - will include her responses to the vigorous and appropriate academic debate engendered by discovery of the fragment, as well as her report on the ink analysis, and further examination of the fragment,” according to a statement released Wednesday by the Harvard Divinity School.

On Sept. 18, the Harvard Divinity School professor announced her findings at a conference of Coptic scholars held in Rome.

“Christian tradition has long held that Jesus was not married, even though no reliable historical evidence exists to support that claim,” King said in a divinity school news release. “This new gospel doesn't prove that Jesus was married, but it tells us that the whole question only came up as part of vociferous debates about sexuality and marriage. From the very beginning, Christians disagreed about whether it was better not to marry, but it was over a century after Jesus's death before they began appealing to Jesus's marital status to support their positions.”

King posted a draft of the paper as well as a question-and-answer and pictures of the fragment on a page on the Harvard Divinity School Web site.

Smithsonian Channel, which planned to chronicle the story behind King’s discovery in a documentary on Sunday, postponed the program. The channel delayed the broadcast “until the text undergoes further tests,” a spokesman said Thursday. A new premiere date won’t be announced until it’s determined when the tests take place.

Since the headline-grabbing announcement, scholars have weighed in on the discovery.

“Several top Coptic specialists dismissed the fragment as a probable forgery almost immediately after King’s presentation at a major gathering of scholars in Rome,” the Boston Globe reported. “And a British New Testament scholar, Francis Watson, posted several short papers online during the last week arguing — persuasively, to some in the field — that the fragment’s text is probably a modern forger’s pastiche of words and phrases taken from the single surviving copy of the Gospel of Thomas.”

The anonymous online posting of nude student pictures has sparked a criminal investigation, and caused turmoil at Weston’s Cypress Bay High School.

An anonymous Web page filled with nude photos is highlighting the dangers of teenage “sexting” and may ultimately lead to criminal charges.

Students at Weston’s Cypress Bay High School believe one or more of their classmates to be responsible for the lurid website, which features more than a dozen sexually explicit photos of teenage girls. The site identifies them as Cypress Bay students — and in some cases, lists their names.

“That’s playing with people’s lives,” said Cypress Bay senior Matthew Gio, 17.

The Broward’s Sheriff’s Office is investigating the website as possible child pornography. It was taken offline late Monday.

The Internet photos went viral, with the link shared rapidly via Twitter. Many of Cypress Bay’s roughly 4,300 students pulled up the images on their smartphones — while still in the building.

It all amounted to a very public humiliation for this group of girls, who are primarily freshmen.

One of the photographed girls was spotted openly weeping at school; another abruptly walked out of class after an onslaught of stares and whispers.

“Oh gosh, it’s so horrible,” said Cherie Benjoseph, co-founder of the KidSafe Foundation, a South Florida-based nonprofit that works to protect children from exploitation and abuse.

Benjoseph said parents and schools can do a better job of teaching children and teens how to protect themselves online. For example, the importance of self-respect and personal boundaries could be incorporated into schools’ sex education classes, and parents can make it a point to scroll through their child’s smartphone.

The Broward School District referred all calls about the incident to BSO.

To be sure, the 21st-century phenomenon of “sexting,” sending explicit photos via text, isn’t limited to teens. Celebrities such as actress Vanessa Hudgens have watched in horror as leaked naked photos go viral on the Internet. Hudgens recently called her own photo scandal “by far the worst moment of my career.”

There’s always the chance that such pictures will leak out. In the case of minors, there’s the added complications of child pornography laws, and the fact that teenage brains are wired to be more reckless than adults.

At Cypress Bay, the photo fallout may linger for years. Benjoseph worries the affected teens “will want to hurt themselves. They will feel that this is not something that they can tolerate and live with … unless they have incredibly strong support. It’s very sad. It’s heartbreaking.”

On Twitter, where news of the photos traveled fast and furiously, comments ranged from sympathetic (“Wow. Feel bad for the girls,” one person wrote) to the you-brought-it-on-yourself variety.

“Exactly why I always say girls shouldn’t send nudes,” tweeted Kiki Estévez. “Once it’s SENT, they can do WHATEVER they want with it.”

Some Twitter users in fact forwarded the photos — apparently unaware that doing so could make them a target for criminal prosecution.

Janet Johnson, a Jacksonville criminal defense attorney, said adults who tweeted the photos or even forwarded the website link could wind up facing longer jail time than the teens who actually posted the pictures online. A key reason: Those teenagers, while still potentially facing the charge of disseminating child porn, would likely be tried in a more lenient juvenile court proceeding.

For adults convicted of spreading the images, a couple of years of prison time is a real possibility, Johnson said, even for first-time offenders. That conviction would also carry the label of being a registered sex offender.

“Once those images are on their phone or iPad or computer, even if they delete them, they’re in possession,” said Johnson, who handles numerous child porn cases. “They can’t wipe that off of their hard drive.”

Some Cypress Bay students were surprised that the photos remained online Friday.

BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said the agency was still working to identify the girls, and won’t request the website operator remove the page until it has confirmed that the girls are minors.

“It’s not that simple,” Coleman-Wright said. “You have to prove that a crime has been committed, that there is in fact illegal activity, before you can demand that a site be taken down.”

Cypress Bay students said at least some of the photos match the student names listed next to them, while others may not.

When it comes to academics, Cypress Bay has a stellar reputation, and the school enjoyed the rare honor of a commencement speech delivered by Vice President Joe Biden last year. But in only a decade or so of existence, Cypress Bay has had multiple sex scandals.

In 2009, police discovered a 17-year-old student using his smartphone to snap photos of girls while they were using the school restroom. Last year, police investigated a social studies teacher and wrestling coach who was accused of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student.

The student confirmed the romantic relationship, but said it was consensual, and she was 18 when it happened. Police did not file any criminal charges in that case.

Youth Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County offers these tips to help prevent your teen from becoming a sexting victim:

• Teach, don’t preach. Use recent news stories as “teachable moments’’ to talk to your teen about your guidelines for safe Internet, cellphone and social media behavior.

•  Encourage your teen to think before they send or post pictures and other personal information. Remember that every post from your teen is an electronic fingerprint that can damage their college careers, future employment opportunities, and their reputations.

•  Stay calm. If your teen confesses to sending or forwarding nude pictures of themselves, be supportive but take action. Tell them to stop immediately and delete any such files.

•  If an inappropriate photo is being forwarded without the subject’s permission, consider talking to the teen or the parents of the teen who is forwarding the photos.

•  Report the situation to local law enforcement or school administrators if necessary and be mindful of the potential criminal consequences.

•  Remind your teen that healthy relationships should be based on mutual respect as well as sexual attraction. Stress that boyfriends and girlfriends shouldn’t pressure them into sending explicit pictures. Get help if you suspect your teen has been a victim of sexting. Talk with your school counselor for guidance.

Cult accused of grooming sex slaves for 'Christ' busted in Mexico

Mexican officials broke up a bizarre cult that allegedly ran a sex-slavery ring among its followers on the U.S. border, authorities said Tuesday.

The "Defensores de Cristo" or "Defenders of Christ" cult allegedly recruited women to have sex with a Spanish man who claimed he was the reincarnation of Christ. Followers were subjected to forced labor or sexual services, including prostitution, according to a victims' advocacy group that said it filed a complaint more than a year ago about the cult.

Federal police, agents of Mexico's National Immigration Institute and prosecutors raided a house earlier this week near Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Laredo, Texas, and found cult members, including children, living in filthy conditions

The institute said 14 foreigners were detained in the raid and have been turned over to prosecutors, pending possible charges.

Those detained include six Spaniards, and two people each from Brazil, Bolivia and Venezuela. One person from Argentina and one from Ecuador were also detained.  Spain's Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed its citizens were among those arrested.

The institute said 10 Mexicans were also found at the house, mainly women, and are presumably among the victims of the cult.

The Attorney General's Office said the investigation was still under way as to what charges, if any, might apply in the case. Given the binds of sect loyalty that had been built over an estimated three years, prosecutors were still trying to work out which of the detainees may be considered victims, and which were abusers.

The institute said the sect's leaders made members pay "tithes," with money or forced labor.

An official of the institute who was not authorized to be quoted by name said that women were recruited to the sect and then were forced to have sex with sect elders; the official described it as a form of human trafficking that included prostitution.

Spaniard Ignacio Gonzalez de Arriba set up shop in Mexico about three years ago, after a stint in Brazil and other parts of South America.

He quickly became involved in offering courses on "bio-programming," an esoteric practice that claims to allow practicants to 'reprogram' their brains to eliminate pain, suffering and anxiety.

But according to the Defenders of Christ website, he quickly moved on to claim that he was Jesus Christ reincarnated.

Photos of Gonzalez de Arriba are juxtaposed with a painting of Christ, purportedly showing how the Spaniards eyebrows, nose and mouth are "exactly like" those of Christ.

Myrna Garcia, and activist with the Support Network for Cult Victims who has worked with victims of the Defenders of Christ cult, said Gonzalez de Arriba "mixed bio-programming, Christian and New Age doctrines and fears about the end of the world ... to control followers, to keep them terrorized."

"He made them believe he was Christ," said Garcia, whose group filed a complaint with Mexican authorities about the cult's abuses about one year ago. "Like Christ, they have to adore him, if not they will lose their souls ... they have to give their lives for him."

"There were women who were forced into prostitution," Garcia noted. "It was a form of human trafficking that was extraordinarily effect from the criminal point of view," she said, because the women were terrified of being separated from the sect.

How the cult managed to thrive in an area of Mexico that is tightly controlled by the violent Zetas drug cartel remains a mystery. However, there could be some link; Gonzalez de Arriba first set up shop in the northern city of Torreon, which also has a strong Zeta's influence.

The immigration institute said in a press release that the Defenders of Christ was headed by Venezuelan citizen Jose Arenas Losanger Segovia, but according to Garcia and the cult's website, he was clearly a lieutenant of Gonzalez de Arriba.

The Interior Department said the Defenders of Christ had not registered as a religious group, as required under Mexican law. Garcia said cells of the cult might still be active in Peru and Argentina.

The government's health regulator has warned there are a rising number of counterfeit condoms being smuggled into to the UK.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulation Agency (MHRA) claims millions have been illegally imported in the last 18 months.

Family planning experts say the bogus condoms don't provide protection against STIs or pregnancy.

Tests carried out on many of the fakes show they have a high burst rate.

Senior investigator Danny Lee-Frost said: "These products are made in the Far East for pennies and then sold over here for pounds.

"They will cut corners. They will cut costs. They will use cheaper ingredients and materials."

He says the condoms are mainly being found on sale in corner shops, newsagents and market stalls.

He said: "It's vital that people buy condoms from well-known reputable retailers and pharmacies."

In August 2012 £1.5m worth of counterfeit condoms were seized at Heathrow Airport. A similar haul was discovered in Yorkshire.

Trading Standards say they are also regularly intercepting them across the country.

Counterfeiters have managed to copy major brands like Durex to convince people. A sample of fakes we were shown fooled Jay Dhadwa, 25, and 24 year-old Ricky Dixon.

Jay said: "I can't believe they aren't the real deal. They look and feel exactly like real ones. They've got the expiry date on the back too and the kite mark. It's impossible to tell."

Danny Lee-Frost admitted: "They certainly look the part. Many people would think it's the proper article."

He says the best way to avoid being caught out is to make sure you buy condoms from reliable places.

"If you're not buying it from a reputable source, it's odds on that it is counterfeit and you shouldn't go anywhere near it."

Sniffer dogs

The MHRA has now employed the help of the UK's first sniffer dogs trained to try to detect counterfeit condoms.

The dogs might be able to tell the difference but authorities are worried many of the counterfeits are difficult to detect because they look so similar to the real thing.

Paul Maddox is responsible for the dogs' training and said: "I was really surprised when I found out about the problem. I've heard about counterfeit medicines but I never thought condoms would ever be an issue.

"When we've trained the dogs up we managed to find a chink in the counterfeiters' armour and we've exploited that. That's why the dogs have been successful."

China puts a price on fresh air as smog becomes hazardous

BEIJING: A Chinese entrepreneur is selling fresh air in soft drink cans, similar to bottled drinking water, as north China is once again choking in toxic smog.

The concentration of airborne PM 2.5 particulates - the smallest and most deadly - went off the chart in the early hours of Tuesday morning for the second time this month, according to the pollution gauge at the American embassy in Beijing.

The air quality index, designed by the US Environmental Protection Agency, cannot cope with levels beyond 500, which is 20 times the World Health Organisation air quality standard.

The embassy gauge had been hovering in the merely ''hazardous'' 300-500 range since Friday.

Chen Guangbiao sells his cans of air for five yuan (75¢) each. It comes in atmospheric flavours including pristine Tibet, post-industrial Taiwan and revolutionary Yan'an, the Communist Party's early base area.

Mr Chen told Fairfax Media he wanted to make a point that China's air was turning so bad that the idea of bottled fresh air was no longer fanciful.

The man reportedly paid $97,350 via 89 fund transfers to different POSB savings accounts. However, Yap remained unsatisfied and continued to extort more money from him, eventually forcing him to lodge a police report.

According to media reports, Yap was born to a single mother from Indonesia and lived with her in a 3-room flat in Marsiling. Yap and her boyfriend are currently unemployed.

In mitigation, Yap claimed she was coerced to commit the crime by her boyfriend as she was afraid of losing him. Soh did not plead guilty.

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Ignoring the red-and-white danger sign, Sri Mulyati walks slowly to the train tracks outside Indonesia's bustling capital, lies down and stretches her body across the rails.

Like the nearly dozen others lined up along the track, the 50-year-old diabetes patient has all but given up on doctors and can't afford the expensive medicines they prescribe.

In her mind, she has only one option left: electric therapy.

"I'll keep doing this until I'm completely cured," said Mulyati, twitching visibly as an oncoming passenger train sends an extra rush of current racing through her body.

She leaps from tracks as it approaches and then, after the last carriage rattles slowly by, climbs back into position.

Pseudo-medical treatments are wildly popular in many parts of Asia – where rumors about those miraculously cured after touching a magic stone or eating dung from sacred cows can attract hundreds, sometimes thousands.

That may be especially true in Indonesia, where chronic funding shortages and chaotic decentralization efforts since the 1998 ouster of longtime dictator Suharto have left many disillusioned with the state-sponsored health system, said Marius Widjajarta, chairman of the Indonesian Health Consumers Empowerment Foundation.

Medical experts say there is no evidence lying on the rails does any good.

But Mulyati insists it provides more relief for her symptoms – high-blood pressure, sleeplessness and high cholesterol – than any doctor has since she was first diagnosed with diabetes 13 years ago.

She turned to train track therapy last year after hearing a rumor about an ethnic Chinese man who was partially paralyzed by a stroke going to the tracks to kill himself, but instead finding himself cured.

It's a story that's been told and retold in Indonesia.

Until recently, more than 50 people would show up at the Rawa Buaya tracks every day. But the numbers have dropped since police and the state-run railroad company erected a warning sign and threatened penalties of up to three months in prison or fines of $1,800.

No one has been arrested yet, and none of the participants in train track therapy has died.

But the dedicated dozen a day who still come say they have no plans to stop.

"They told us not to do it anymore, but what else can I do," said Hadi Winoto, a 50-year-old stroke victim who has trouble walking.

Brad Pitt is “ready to shell out a staggering $10 million” to make sure “raunchy photos and a rumored sex tape” starring Angelina Jolie “never see the light of day,” according to the National Enquirer.

In its latest “world exclusive” (cough), the Enquirer claims there may be a set of previously unseen racy photos featuring Jolie “floating around — including some involving self-mutilation — as well as a possible sex tape.”

The tabloid’s source says Pitt fears that if these “rumored” photos and video ever surface, “it would scar the couple’s six children emotionally and psychologically.”

“Brad’s out to protect the new image that Angelina has tried hard to build — A-list actress, doting mother of six and UN human-rights crusader,” explains the Enquirer insider. “He’ll do whatever it takes to buy these photos and track down the alleged sex tape.”

We’re sure Pitt would do anything to save Jolie and his children from embarrassment.

Except the Enquirer has NO CLUE whether there’s actually a Jolie sex tape.

A source tells the tabloid that Pitt hired investigators to look into his partner’s past, and was allegedly told that she “may have made a sex tape during a ‘drug-fueled session’ in 1999.”

From there, the magazine dives head first into wild speculation about an alleged heroin bender more than 13 years ago and what Jolie may or may not have been photographed doing.

“Angie was so whacked out on dope that she doesn’t recall exactly what she did,” a so-called “insider” tells the Enquirer. “But she believes that it may have involved ‘cutting,’ as well as racy sex.”

Uh-huh.

It’s important to note that the Enquirer, which has an abysmal recent track record with Jolie and Pitt, has absolutely no idea whether any previously unseen raunchy photos or video exist.

Everything in the article is couched in terms like “alleged” and “rumored.”

There’s no explanation for why the supposed sex images from 1999 would suddenly be released now.

And the “$10 million” figure only comes in the very last line of the piece, when the Enquirer source says Pitt is “willing to spend $10 million if he has to. When it comes to Angie and the kids, money is no object.”

And when it comes to printing baseless speculation as an “exclusive,” reality is no object to the magazine.

It’s pretty clear that the Enquirer just wanted an “Angelina Jolie Sex Tape” story, regardless of specifics or facts or evidence.

A source close to the situation tells Gossip Cop the report is 100 percent “false.”

Two patrons have reportedly been banned for life from an all-you-can-eat buffet in England -- for eating too much.

George Dalmon, 26, and Andy Miles, 25, were booted from Gobi, a Mongolian Barbecue restaurant in Brighton, after the manager labeled the duo "a couple of pigs," according to reports in the British press.

The two guys were Gobi regulars, scarfing somewhere in the range of five bowls of stir-fry apiece each time: "Basically they just come in and pig out," a manager, who asked not to be named, explained to The Sun. "We have put up with them for two years but I've had enough."

He added that, in two years, neither of the pair had tipped or purchased anything other than water and the buffet. He defended his buffet-banning actions to The Telegraph: "We are not a charity, we're a business. It's our restaurant and we can tell people not to come back if we don't want them to."

Gobi's manager isn't the first to gripe about a bad customer. Indeed, a site recently launched aiming to be a place for owners to blacklist or complain about their patrons. BadConsumers.com attempts to expose those who have stiffed small companies--not quite the case for these stuffed patrons.

Gobi's website continues to advertise the buffet deal, luring in customers with the promise of "the finest meats, seafood and fresh vegetables" stir-fried for you "as many times as you wish." A visit to the buffet set each man back £12 (about $20).

Dalmon and Miles have since defended their actions and believe Gobi shouldn't be able to kick them out. Dalmon told The Argus, "They’ve only got small bowls and you can’t get enough in there so we always go back for more."

Whether visiting family or taking a vacation, the winter holiday season is one of the busiest and most stressful travel times of the year. But guests beware, don't take your frustrations out on the hotel staff. It may make your stay very unpleasant.

In his book "Heads in Beds: A Reckless Memoir of Hotels, Hustles and So-Called Hospitality," Jacob Tomsky, who worked his way up from valet to the much-valued front desk concierge, reveals the secret tactics hotels and inns use as payback against guests.

"There is a thousand ways that I can get back at you for something you don't even know you did," he said.

Tomsky shared five of the egregious hotel staff secrets he witnessed over the years, plus two ways guests can have their complaints to the front desk work to their advantage.

1. Your Wheels, Their Squeals

It can start before a guest even walks through the hotel's front doors. Tomsky said a guest's first enemy is the hotel valet. Even with tip, he said, the parker can still take your car for a rip-roaring joy ride through the parking garage.

"A valet parker probably got hired last week, probably getting fired next week, doesn't really care that much," Tomsky said. "The valet is not going to make any money unless he gets that dollar tip. So there's a focus on speed. Of course when it comes out it's driven really slowly and carefully."

2. Tip Now or Pay Later

Valet is just the beginning, Tomsky said, and the battle really begins at the front desk. He cautioned that online discount seekers might have to settle for discount service.

"The biggest lie in the hotel business is that all the rooms are basically the same," Tomsky said.

He suggested that flashing a $20 at the front desk could score you a room upgrade. But if you come in empty-handed, chances are you will get a worse room and you would not even know it.

3. In New York, Beware Room 1212

It may sound like a good deal -- a high floor room can come with beautiful views -- but Tomsky said it's not.

He said some hotel guests don't know that when using the room phone, you have to dial out first, typically by pressing an 8 or a 9, to place a call outside of the hotel -- and 212 is a New York area code.

"If I put you in Room 1212, it's a beautiful room by all accounts," Tomsky said. "However, there are a bunch of idiots all through the hotel that don't dial out, and they'll type 1-212, they'll start typing any local number and it's going to ring 1212 all day, all night."

4. The Bag Drag

Hoping to carry your own bags to avoid paying the bellman? Not a good idea.

Tomsky said the staff will use guilt and fear very easily to entice guests to let them help you.

"The bellman and the doorman are very good at lingering, it's a very strong skill," he said. "If they stand a little too long, making you a little too uncomfortable, and then you'll reach for your wallet."

5. When In Your Room, Use the Plastic Cups

It's time to settle into your room, but don't get too comfortable. Tomsky said he once supervised housekeepers and said they will take shortcuts when cleaning the rooms, including wiping down drinking glasses with the same cleaning supplies to wipe down surfaces.

"Honestly, Pledge will clean a mirror or a glass to perfection, spotless," Tomsky said, adding that sometimes those cleaning rags may have cleaned, say, the bathroom, before being used to wipe down the glass.

The best advice, Tomsky said, is stick to the plastic cups.

6. However, Complaints Can Work to the Guest's Advantage: Room Charges

Tomsky said there are some instances where guests can complain to the front desk and have it work to their benefit.

Want to watch that pay-per-view movie or sneak a drink out of the mini bar but avoid the cost? Tomsky said those charges are often disputed and sometimes the front desk will back down.

"Even if you have watched a movie, and you say that it froze in the middle, really no one is going to fight you, that's not a hotelier's job," he said. "They don't want to accuse you of being a liar."

7. You Can Avoid the 24-Hour Cancellation Fee, If You're Strategic

Tomsky said if you need to cancel your hotel reservation at the last minute, call the hotel the day of your reservation -- twice.

"Let them know that you don't want to cancel, you just want to shift your reservation," he said. "That happens all the time. Your business meeting got pushed to next week. Then you have got your reservation for next Friday."

Then call the hotel right back and get a different person on the phone. "Say, 'I'd like to cancel my reservation for next Friday,'" and you will be golden, he said.

A Belgian man wants his 19-year marriage anulled after he discovered his Indonesian wife is transgender.

The 64-year-old, known only as Jan, met his partner during a previous marriage when she was working as his children's au-pair.

He says his world 'collapsed' when his 48-year-old spouse Monica admitted her gender identity.

'I feel I've been assaulted,' he told the Het Nieuwsblad newspaper.

'I brought her to Belgium. That was not easy. The Belgian courts had serious doubts about the authenticity of her birth and her identity papers, but eventually they accepted it anyway. I thought she was an attractive woman, all woman. She had no male traits.'

He added that he never suspected a thing until his friends and family told him they had heard rumors that Monica was transgender.

Furious, he confronted her about the allegations after discovering flirtatious messages from other men on her computer. And he admits reacting violently to the news.

'I pushed her against the wall and said: Now I know the truth. Are you a man?' he said.

'She then announced that she was born as a boy and that she had been operated on. She was now a woman, and so she did not need to tell me about her past as a man. My world collapsed. That evening came to blows. The police came.'

Jan is now undergoing psychiatric treatment and has now started legal proceedings in Belgium to have the marriage annulled on the grounds that Monica 'deliberately deceived' him.
