As we wind down Gratitude Week, I was reminded that April is National Poetry Month, so I thought I'd end the week with some gratitude for the poets of the world. I have a deep love and appreciation of poetry and began writing poetry when I was 8 years old and do still to this day.
Unfortunately, I am not great poet, but I do know great poetry when I read it.
My life has been been deeply moved and influenced by the works of great poets such as Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, T.S. Elliot, Ann Sexton, Sylvia Plath, Rumi, Pablo Neruda, and many more great souls who have blessed us with the power of their words. So, when I was asked to pick one of my favorite poems it was difficult...I have too many favorites! I decided on this one by Rumi. I think it is meaningful for our time and hope you enjoy it.
The Guest-House
This human being is a guest-house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture.
Still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
~Rumi
