Branching out the Buddha: The Chinese orchard growing pears in the image of religion's founder

A pear grown in the shape of one of the world's most important spiritual teachers? You Buddha believe it.

These bizarre Buddha-shaped pears were invented by a farmer in China who is planning to export his novel idea to the UK.

Hao Xianzhang has created 10,000 of the mini marvels at his orchard this season and said he plans to take the fruits of his labour to Europe.

Hao spent six years perfecting the intricate baby pears, carefully crafting each one which grows inside an individual mould.

Despite their hefty cost of £5 each, locals in his home village of Hexia, in Hebia, northern China, have been snapping them up.

 'People seem to think they are cute or lucky and will buy them as soon as they're off the tree,' Hao explained.

Divorces can get pretty ugly, especially when the reason is your looks.

A mysterious story, apparently emanating from a court case in northern China has stoked a worldwide debate over plastic surgery, beauty and deception.

Fox 31 reported a strange court case last week, where a Chinese woman, who had plastic surgery before her wedding, and was allegedly sued by her husband.

The website reported that Jian Feng divorced and sued his "beautiful" wife for around £75,000 and won, because she had deceived him into believing her good looks were all natural, when they had been fashioned from a surgeon's scalpel.

According to reports, Feng told a court in China he had been deeply in love with his beautiful wife until they had a baby girl.

Gazing into his baby daughter's eyes, Feng was repulsed.

He apparently then went on to describe his child as horrifically ugly, with no resemblance to him or his wife.

The story suggested Feng immediately suspected his wife of having an affair, incredulous at the possibility that he could have spawned such an offspring, according to Fox 31.

According to the report, his wife was forced to confess that before her marriage, she had spent £60,000 on plastic surgery in South Korea, and looked completely different to how she was born. The judge in the case is said to have awarded Feng compensation for the deception.

Pictures have been circulated on Western and Chinese blogs and Twitter, reportedly of the wife before and after surgery, and pictures purporting to be of the baby, but neither these nor the story itself has been confirmed.

On Reddit, it was questioned whether the story could be a hoax, or an old story which has resurfaced after being picked up by Fox.

Nana, Chinese Teen, Develops Abnormal Hair Growth Due To Life-Saving Bone Marrow Treatment 

A young girl from China has become a lonely recluse after she developed hirsutism following a life-saving bone marrow transplant and drug treatment, reports say.

According to China's Xinhua news agency, the 16-year-old, known only as Nana, began growing thick dark hair on her face and body after receiving treatment for a life-threatening case of aplastic anemia.

Nana was diagnosed with the condition in 2010. With aplastic anemia, the body's bone marrow is unable to produce sufficient new blood cells, according to the National Lung Blood and Heart Institute.

"The doctor said that…it was very serious and without treatment, [Nana] would die," the girl's mother told Xinhua.

The teenager was admitted to a hospital in Zhejiang province, where she was started on a potent drug treatment regimen. Nana's health soon improved, but before long, another challenge was to emerge in the young girl's life.

Liao Shen Evening News writes:

    [Nana] needs to rely on the drug treatment, but the side effects of the drugs include this "hairy disease." After taking these drugs…the girl's face has grown a thick black beard, and her arms and legs are covered with body hair.

"Every day she cries, wanting to go to school," her mother said, adding that this side effect was entirely unexpected.

Nana was reportedly an excellent student and "lively" child, but since the side effect of the drug has become more and more obvious, Xinhua writes that the girl has become increasingly reclusive.

"Once a lively young girl, there are days when Nana will not speak a word...and more and more, she spends her hours hidden in her room reading books by herself," the news agency writes.

This is not the first time this year that The Huffington Post has written about young girls struggling with conditions that have resulted in excess hair on their bodies.

In Februrary, HuffPost UK wrote about three "incredible" sisters from India whose lives have been "blighted by one of the rarest conditions in the world -- werewolf syndrome." The sisters' bodies are covered from head to foot in thick hair.

In June, a 6-year-old Chinese schoolgirl named Liu Jiangli, who is partially covered in black fur, made headlines with her moving story.
